In the world of letters, there is a growing interest in the traditional sociological border studies. Due to the influences of geographical border, racial differences, history and culture, border writing is es-pecially prominent in Mexican American literature.Taking Mexican American women writer Sandra Cis-neros’s two novels---The House on Mango Street and Caramelo as the analyzing texts, this article a-dopts Gloria Anzaldúa’s border theory to analyze the border consciousness and its extended significance within the two novels.Instead of acting as an obstacle, the plight of living in borderland turns out to be the catalyst for the self-improvement of the Mexican Americans. The new mestiza consciousness inclu-ding a tolerance of ambiguity and a pursuit of harmony helps them to cross the border and create a promis-ing homeland.
