"忆梅下西洲",西洲是美好的回忆,抒情的起点;"西洲在何处"、"鸿飞满西洲",西洲则是对"郎"的埋怨,一怨人不到,再怨信不至;"吹梦到西洲",西洲是凄绝情感的寄望。西洲贯穿首尾,层层推进心理情感的变化,形成《西洲曲》整体"清怨"的抒情特色。
＂Remembering the plum blossoms being sent to Xizhou＂ shows Xizhou is the beautiful memory of the female speaker and the beginning of her emotional expression. ＂Where is Xizhou？＂ and ＂Xizhou is full of swans flying＂ are actually her repinings against her ＂lover＂： the former about the non-arrival of him and the latter about the non-arrival of his letters. ＂Carrying my dreams to Xizhou＂ indicates Xizhou is the longing destination for her lonely and desperate emotions. Xizhou runs through the poem, stimulates the climactical changes of inner emotions, and establishes the general lyrical features of clearness and repining of ＂The Ballad of Xizhou＂.
