A new method for preparing expansible graphite was studied. The expansible graphite with high expanded volume was prepared in mixed acids solution with potassium permanganate as oxidizing agent and ferric trichloride as inserting agent. The optimum conditions were obtained with the parameters as follows: the weight ratio of graphite, potassium permanganate, ferric trichloride and the mixed acid is 1.0∶0.8∶0.2∶3.0, the reaction time is 0.5 h and the reaction temperature is 25 ℃.
