William Faulkner is one of the greatest American novelists of the twentieth_century. 'A Rose for Emily' is the masterpiece of his short fiction. The paper analyses the causes of Emily's tragedy with particular interest in family background,social factors and the heroine's personality, pointing out the theme is to portray 'the conflict between God and Satan' in the human heart.
