Profound artistic conception lies beneath the surface of the plays of Ma Zhiyuan. It reveals to the readers the qualities of aloofness, elegance, naturalness from the pathetic elements, making Ma's plays all the more moving and winning them a brilliant name in the treasury of the Chinese literature.
