An improvement on carboxylation agent to synthesizenitrophenylacetic acids has been worked out, in which sodium carbonates(or potassium carbonate) is used as a part of carboxylation agent. whenmole ratio-sodium phenolate: nitrotoluene(o-or p-) :sodium sarbonate(or potassium carbonate) attains 2:1:0.5, o-nitrophenylacetic acid yieldsin 82%, and p-nitrophenylacetic acid in 90%, if adding a little of tetra-butyl ammonium bromide at the same time.
