Ant colony algorithm (ACA) is a new bionic algorithm that is usually used to solve combination optimization problems. A new heuristic ant colony algorithm (HACA) is developed for searching for critical slip surface of complicated slope based on modifying the ACA's structure and the transfer probability of ant. The paper investigates the physical and mechanical characters of open pit rock in extremely dry land, and discusses the application of HACA to search for the critical slip surface and stability estimation of open pit slope.The results show that the presented method has obvious advantages compared with traditional methods.2figs.,1tab.,10refs.
