牛李党争左右着晚唐政局几乎每个官员都有党派背景周墀是牛党中的重要人物然而周墀并不热衷于朋党之争他是个比较务实的人担任地方官他做了不少有益于百姓的善政作为宰相他敢于直言进谏勇于抵制官场上的不正之风善于识别和提拔人才当然他也称不上是一位政绩卓著的宰相因为他当政期间并没有对晚唐腐败的政治局面进行刷新总体而言周墀是以正直爱才而称誉晚唐的一位名相
The strife between Niu Faction and Li Faction was the main feature of the political scene in the late Tang Dynasty, Almost all the officials were related to either of the two political factions. Zhou Chi was one of the most important figures of the Niu Faction, but he was not so keen on the struggle between these two cliques. He was a man who was very practical. As a local official, he did many good things for the people; as a prime minister, he spokes to the Emperor without reservation, and dared to resist all the unhealthy trends and evil practices in the official circles. He was adept at discerning and promoting talented people. It couldn抰 be said that Zhou Chi was excellent in the achievements in his political career. Zhou Chi was not a prime minister full of political achievements as he didn抰 do much to change the corrupt political situation in the late Tang Dynasty. Generally speaking, Zhou Chi , as a prime minister in late Tang Dynasty, was famous for his honesty and uprightness and cherishing talented people.
