In Huang Di Nei Jing,a Chinese classic of medicine, the word shen, which originates from the law of Yin and Yang in The Book of Changes, not only refers philosophically to the subtle interaction between Yin and Yang and religiously to the supernatural beyond Yin and Yang, but also medically generalizes human vitality, which is manifested in spirit and mind.In addition to these major meanings,it is used to describe a doctor's miraculous treating level and a sage' s ability to communicate with the law of Yin and Yang, and form some proper names like Shennong and Shenmen. When we translate shen,we need to differentiate between its varieties of meanings, and seek for its English equivalent on the principle of unity and variation,so as to avoid excessive consistency,e.g."spirit",and inconsistency in disregard of the contexts it lies in.
