Objective To investigate the changes of bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with type 2 diabetes. Method BMD of the proximal femur and the anteroposterior spine were determined using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) in 61 type 2 diabetic patients, 29 age-matched healthy subjects and 54 young healthy subjects. Results The incidence of osteoporosis in type 2 diabetic patients was 44.26%, occurring mostly in the lumbar vertebras in male and the vertebras along with the femur neck in female patients. Compared with age-matched healthy subjects, BMD was more likely to decrease in the femur neck, troch, L2, L3, L4 and L2~4 vertebras in male patients, and in the trochanter and Ward's triangle in female patients. Conclusion Osteoporosis is a frequent complication of type 2 diabetes that tends to compromise the hip and spine in male and the hip in female patients.
