In April 2, 1993, 19 specimens of freshwater medusae were collected from two pools around the Yangtse River in Guizhou town, Zigui County (31 N, 110 40'E), Hubei Province. After a preliminary study, we consider that they are a new species of the Craspedacusta. Craspedacusta brevinema sp. nov (fig.1). Type species (holotype 1, paratype 18) are desposited in the College of Life Science, Henan Normal University. Umbrella lower than a hemishere, 7~15 mm in diameter. Velum narrow, about 1/5 of the diameter of umbrella. Marginal tentacles are short, thick and arranged irregularly in four order, giving a total number of 145~400. Perradial tentacles four, not longer than other tentacles, about 1/3 of the diameter of umberlla. Stomach large, manubrium long, with four large lips, extending beyond the umbrella margin. Nematocyst warts on the tentacles arranged irregularly. Nematocyst warts is lower conical in shape, each containing 5~8 nematocysts. Four gonads larger, pocket-like, twisted, and green in color when living. Statocysts tubular, 92~158 in number. The new species allied to Craspedacusta sinensis but the tentacles are short, thick, when the movement has stopped the tentacles stretch soon. Nematocyst warts lower conical; gonads large, twisted, green in color. These characters of the new species are distinguished from the C. sinensis.
