摘要
“五四”一代人对民主的认识相对于其２０年前的戊戌一代，有许多发展和进步，如：将民主、自由从救亡途径、富强工具中离析出来，而赋予它以独立的价值；从更多地承继传统到主要渊源于西学；对民主内涵的理解由政治扩展到人类生活的其他领域；从注重上层寻求政治改革的动力到强调民众的自觉与参与：从德谟克拉西到无产阶级专政，并强调建设更高“程级”的民主。
Compared with the generation of Wuxi Reform 20 years earlier, the May Fourth Movement made progress in understanding of democracy. They viewed liberty and democracy not as instrument values of wealthy and the salvation of the nation but as independent values; they believed that democracy is rather a tradition of the West than that of China; they expanded the implication of democracy from political to other domains of human lives; they shifted form seeking the dynamic of political reform in elite to appealing to mass movement; and some of them advanced democracy to proletariate dictatorship and stressed on struggling for 'high rank' of democracy.
