摘要 分布在我国南海海疆的珊瑚礁和珊瑚岛犹如一颗颗璀璨的明珠点缀着蔚蓝色的海洋,并以其旖旎的海岛风光,多彩多姿的珊瑚丛林,色彩斑斓的海洋生物,吸引着无数旅游者前往观光、探秘。当你尽情地畅游海底世界,沉醉于这美丽迷人的珊瑚风光的时候,你可知道珊瑚还具有很多神奇的本领?现在让我来告诉你珊瑚的一项独特本领——充当热带海洋“温度计”。 After long observation and research, scientists have found that coral has growth lings very similar to that of trees, with the appearance of a pair of strips alternating in bright and dim colors annually, which record in detail the annual growth. Such strips are called growth belts. Actually the annual growth belts of coral vary, some being broad and some narrow, due to the changing temperature of surrounding seawater. Usually the growth belt is relatively broad when the temperature of seawater is high,and narrow when the temperature Is low. Scientists studied the relationship between the growth rate of coral and the temperature of seawater and have discovered a sound correlation between the width of coral growth belt and the temperature of seawater and drawn a quantitative mathematical formula to deal with this. Such a mathematical relationship is called the coral 'thermograph', or, to be more exact, the 'thermograph' of coral growth rate. It should be noted that the first expert to study the coral 'thermograph' in the world was the iate professor Ma Tingying. from China. He began his studies in the 1930s.
