The effect of the expression of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxy-lic acid (ACC) oxidase gene on the ethylene production in outer-pericarp, inner-pericarp and columella of ripening Hayward kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) is studied. The results indicate that (1) the ethylene production rates varys in different tissues; (2) The transcript levels of ACC oxidase gene mRNA are similar in all tissues, and (3) ACC oxidase protein is expressed differently in fruit tissues and in sequence. In conclusion, the differences of ethylene production among different tissues may be caused primarily by different expressions of ACC oxidase.
