As a cache phrase in our international communication, "China' s rise" has exerted considerable impact on the international audience. However, little academic attention has been paid to what exactly such impact is and how it is brought about. Drawing on rhe- torical theories, this paper argues that "rise" is a typical discursive construct, projecting an image of China with growing power and ris- ing international status, thus engendering anxiety or even hostility among international audience. Based on the differing implications of "jueqi" and "rise" in respective cultures, especially the hostility aroused by "China' s rise" in leading international reports, this paper proposes that "rise" be replaced with "emergence" and "development" in our international communication.
