Victorian women writers were expected to write within certain limits.Among many others things,they should create female characters that bear much resemblance to'the Angel in the House'.Charlotte Brontё suffers attacks for her creating Jane Eyre,a character that greatly deviates from the ideal Victorian woman: 'the Angel in the House'.Having in mind the task of restoring Charlotte's reputation,Elizabeth Gaskell sets out to write The Life of Charlotte Brontё,through which is revealed Victorian women writers' way to cope with duties of all sorts imposed upon them by the dominant ideology.It is strikingly noticeable that in the name of fulfilling duties,Victorian women writers strive to widen their sphere of action.Their efforts benefit women writers of later generations.
