Edwidge Danticat is a contemporary Afro-Caribbean-American woman writer. Her first novel Breath, Eyes, Memory is a trauma novel that shows Haitian women' s blood and tears. I will discuss this novel from two aspects: personal trauma and collective trauma that Martine suffered. On the one hand, nightmare in the cane fields can not be erased from her mind. Then her daughter' s betrayal makes her situation worse. On the other hand, Duvalier government' s autocratic rule and patriarchal culture suppresses Haitian women a lot, while those who are exiled from Haiti are confronted with racial discrimination.
