Australia attaches great importance to the professional development of the librarians. An investigation into the whole 191 libraries released in 2009 reveals that most of Australia's librar- ies have formulated professional development plan for their staff, incorporated the professional de- velopment of their staff into their overall strategic development plan and arranged special budget for it. Two-thirds of the libraries have carried out the library service quality evaluation, and used the evaluation results to adjust the professional development goals of their staff. More than a half of the libraries are equipped with a full-time manager who is in charge of the staff professional devel- opment affairs. And most of the staff are willing to participate in activities of professional develop- ment. The most common professional development activity is orientation training or induction training. 99% of the respondents felt that the library encourages and supports their professional de- velopment activities.
