John Updike is a famous contemporary writer in America ,who is famous for depicting America＆#39;s middle-class life . Free is a short novel in his twilight years . In this novel , Updike still continues his usual subjects . Freedom and bondage , desire and morality collide intensely in main characters . By using Sartre＆#39;s theories of existential freedom , this thesis discloses another way of interpretation for this novel .
