Pingyao Ancient City was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1997 for its exceptional preservation of an intact, classic Han Chinese city. Amidst Pingyao’s architectural heritages, traditional courtyard houses are the largest in quantity yet few courtyard houses are being listed as a protected cultural heritage site. Over the years, these houses are showing signs of wear and deterioration, unable to satisfy modern living needs, and lacking appropriate repair and maintenance system and conservation methods. In addition to the appropriate preservation of the traditional layout, materials, construction techniques and historic fabrics, the more fundamental and complex issues lay in improving these historic buildings’ functions and efficiency, introducing appropriate rehabilitation and adaptive reuse, and take into consideration practical needs of the residents and other relevant users.
