《独立宣言》是美国建国标志,其前言中说:"我等之见解为,下述真理不证自明:凡人生而平等,秉造物者之赐,拥诸无可转让之权利,包含生命权、自由权与追寻幸福之权(原意为:拥有私人资产之权)。"这部法典引导着无数美国人实现其美国梦。本文通过分析西奥多·赫曼·阿尔伯特·德莱赛(Theodore Herman Albert Dreiser)的小说《美国悲剧》中主人公克莱德悲惨的经历来共同探讨平等、自由等人本意识在现实社会中的存在意义。

The preface said: "We hold theses truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, which among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness".
