Walter Scott's Waverley is an attempt to strike a balance between Scottish traditional culture and modem English society, the former represented by romantic elements in the novel, the latter signified by its rational ending. Instead of making a choice between the two, Scott evades it by turning to aesthetics as a means of redirecting and releasing the subversive energy generated by the hero' s act of rebellion. The political conflict that backgrounds Waverley' s north-bound travel is interpreted in familial terms, and "resolved" through a marriage between young people from the two opposing camps and nations.
