Wireless sensing technology is getting more and more applications in large scale structures due to its prominent advantage in construction cost efficiency and simplicity in installation and future maintenance. However it is not yet a mature technique for structural health monitoring until problems in long-distance real-time communication, power harvesting and reliability in outdoor environment are solved. In this work, a wireless sensing system based on Narada units is designed for the health monitoring of a large span gymnasium structure under construction. Real-time data of global vibration, member strain and temperature are recorded via this system. The system was customized to the characteristics of spatial structures such as large span, complex configuration and considerable amount of sensors. Field tests validate the functionality of this wireless system in multi-point real-time measurement and event triggering when applied on a full scale structure exposed to outdoor environment. Some common problems of applying wireless technology in structural health monitoring are reflected and discussed. With specific modification, this system can hopefully be employed on other structures that are spatially large and geometrically complicated.
