The National Aquatics Center, commonly referred to as the Water Cube, has transformed itself from a temporary Olympic venue wholly dedicated to swimming, diving, and synchronized swimming to a permanent public leisure center focused on water. In fact, the initial design of the Water Cube factored in its future reuse. The Water Cube's construction, initiated in 2003, has provided an example of how a purpose-built sports venue can be adapted into an attraction for the general public. The post-Olympic Water Cube reflects the legacy of events that had an important impact on society, but it also continues to have an impact on urban life through its design concept and technology solutions.
