In the mind of people in the Tang Dynasty, the five ridges were an important geographical and cul tural boundary featuring a unique natural and cultural landscape. Tang poets strongly expressed their geographic ex- perience when they crossed the five ridges, with the most dominant feelings being distance, scorching heat and malaria. Moreover, once they crossed the five ridges, they often embraced a nostalgic longing for the north, thus having voiced their feelings of returning homewards in their poems now and then. Meanwhile, as a boundary between "the Han nationality and Minorities", the five ridges had been employed to mirror Tang poets' perception of the culture of minorities as well as their identity with the Chinese culture.
