In A. S. Byatt's Still Life, Stephanie, one of the major characters, dies metaphorically at the end of the novel. On the basis of Freudian death instinct, Kant's moral religion, and the relationship between death and tragedy, this paper analyzes the signification of Stephanie's death from the perspectives of prose style, lexical meaning, and language function. Deathconveys the power of life in a negative way to start a new life, through which the motivation of Stephanie~ death and Byatt's view on death are presented
