John Ruskin was strongly against imitation in artistic creation. He held that a great work is the result of the author' s imagination. "Pathetic Fallacy", widely applied by the Romanticists in their works, is not imagination. Though it brings certain pleasure to the reader, the greatest masters often avoid using it in their works. Ruskin' s criticism of "Pathetic Fallacy" is the reflection of his attitude toward the Victorian Romanticists, especially the romantic poets, who put individuality and passion in the unique position. In Modern Painters, Ruskin declared that "the power of the masters is shown by their self- annihilation". His views directly influenced T. S. Eliot' s theory of "Impersonality".
