Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most common microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus. It is manifestation of diabetic microvascular patho- logical change and neuropathy in retinal microvascular environment, and is now one of the main causes of adult blinding in the world. The gradually rising morbidity and blind- ing rate of DR are exerting a serious influence on living quality of patients. DR patho- genesis is associated with many factors, including gene polymorphism, cytokines, bio- chemical mechanism and inflammation, of which polymorphism of VEGF gene has be- come a hotspot of researches for DR pathogenesis in recent years. According to present findings, certain correlations exist between VEGF genes such as -634G/C, + 405G/C, -2578C/A,935C/T,450C/T and DR pathogenesis. Yet there is no common understand- ing about research outcome of correlational study between polymorphism of VEGF gene and DR. This article is to review research advances on correlation between polymor- phism of VEGF gene and DR.
