An intelligent controller of CO 2 welding current waveform has been developed. Its main circuit is an IGBT shunt switching circuit in parallel with the welding arc. During the short circuit period of CO 2 welding, under the real-time control of a microcomputer system, the IGBT circuit can cut off partial current wave and realize a quantitative control of welding current waveform. In this paper,the operation procedure,control rule and main parameters of the intelligent controller have been analyzed in detail. An intelligent control mode has been presented which can control the current waveform both in the ending moment of the short-circuit and the re-striking moment of the arc to effectively decrease the current peak and its impacting action.
