Tortoiseshell pattern is square continuous pattern connected by the hexagon as the basic unit.In ancient China, many tortoiseshell patterns were influenced by western culture. In the silk of Ming dynasty,at least two tortoiseshell patterns came from Islamic world: 1) tortoiseshell pattern with elongated hexagon unit(elongation along the direction of acumination);2) tortoiseshell pattern formed by hexagram surrounded by the hexagon. This paper analyzes the profound tradition of Islamic hexagon form and tortoiseshell pattern, compares and studies two types of Islamic tortoiseshell patterns on the silk of Ming dynasty and discusses the connotation of hexagon form and tortoiseshell pattern. The author considers the prosperity of exchanges between China and Islamic world and development of silk making technology in Ming dynasty are the causes why Islamic pattern elements occurred on the silk of Ming dynasty. The tortoiseshell pattern on the silk of Ming dynasty referred to the pattern forms of Islamic world, but most connotations belonged to China.
