摘要
哄闹公堂案发生后,袁树勋罢庭抗争,严词交涉;工部局被迫释放女犯时的挑衅行为引发流血冲突;英国交涉由被动转为主动,执意索赔巨款。曲折复杂的两年善后交涉,最终以袁树勋个人名义赔付英方5万两白银了结。袁树勋据理力争,维护国权,重视民众外交,值得肯定;但其疏于防范,后续交涉陷于被动之教训令人深思。
After the mixed court case happened, Yuan Shuxun stopped the court＇ s working to protest. The municipal committee was forced to set the female prisoner free and show provocation which led to sanguinary conflict. The British changed from passiveness to initiativeness, asking for huge indemnities. The flexural and difficult follow- up two - year ne- gotiations was finally ended by compensating the British 50,000 silver in Yuan Shuxun＇ s own name. It is right that Yuan Shuxun argued strongly on just grounds, defended our national sovereignty and paid attention to the mass diplomacy. How- ever, people should learn the lesson he didn＇ t take strict precautions against the blood clash, which let the follow - up ne- gotiations stay in a passive position.
