Sweat, written by the Afro-American woman writer Zora Neale Hurston, which portrays different aspects of a black washwoman's oppressive reality, is a multi-theme short story. Through showing the sexual power struggle between a black couple, the story poses questions of the protagonist's emancipation from her tyrannical husband in the wider systems of racial inequality and rules of Christian morality. At the same time, the metaphoric presentation of sexual oppression, the in-depth exploration of the conflicts between good and evil, as well as the subtle innuendo about the white superiority laden in the black consciousness, lend artistic value to the work.
