A high performance gel permeation chromatographic (HPGPC) method was developed for the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution determination of chemical products including phenolic resin, polymer of octadecyl-styrenyl-ether and heavy asphaltene from coal liquefaction. The GPC column (50 cm × 0.79 i. d. ), was Packed with HSG-15 support. For the analysis of phenolic resin, polymer and catalytic liquefaction of coal, the mobile phase was tetrahydrofuran0. 8 mL/min,chloroform at 1. 2 mL/min and tetrahydrofuran at 0 .9 mL/min, respectively. The GPC calibration curves can be expressed as logM = 4.52848 - 0.08577t, logM = 4.53991 - 0. 14428t and logM = 5 .0936 - 0. 1095t for resin, polymer and catalytic liquefaction of coal, respectively.
