This paper analyses the reason of the hero' s suicide and the meaning of the" Meiji spirit" in the Japanese literature giant Natsumesoseki' s work. The Heart, which was written in his later years. The writer indicates the hero "teacher" committed sui- cide because of the condemnation of the traditional moral principles, not for the "Meiji spirit". Natsumesoseki was disgusted with the era of the instant benefits. In each of his works, the Western civilization which emphasizes self-centeredness and individual- ism was questioned by the intellectuals like the hero. In the conflict between Eastern and Western cultures, the "Meiji spirit" is actually the reflection of loneliness and doubt of a generation' s intellectuals with the hero as a typical example, who cherished traditional Eastern culture.
