Flannery O' Connor portrays in her fiction a group of old Southerners who have lost their property and po- sition in the process of social transformation. While their material lives become from bad to worse, their mentality is occupied with a strong sense of loss and dislocation. Indulging themselves in the good old days, the senior citizens voice their strident criticism on the contemporary society by Contrasting the past with the present. Their outlook on life which privileges the past and undervalues the present leads them to a more marginalized status of existence, and sometimes even brings about an extremely horrific consequence. In treating such anachronistic and nostalgic people, O' Connor satirizes them in a kind manner, and at the same time expresses her sincere sympathy for them.
