Illness is an inescapable human experience which attracts poetic attention in all ages. Due to its aesthetic value and realistic significance, it has been illustrated in modem English poetry dating from the Re- naissance and up to the Victorian age. Although poetic creation is a highly individualistic endeavor, conformity in illness narration is noted in poems of a certain age or those from the same school. This paper believes social morale and national mentality determines the poetic selection and presentation of a specific disease while hy- gienic condition only serves as a secondary reason for that uniformity.
