Objective To investigate the effects of umbilical medicine moxibustion and starch moxibustion on the symptoms in primary dysmenorrhea patients, compare the efficacies of the two treatments, validate the influence of medicine on the effect of umbilicus therapy and explain the mechanism of action of umbilicus therapy. Method Sixty-three primary dysmenorrhea patients were randomly allocated to two groups, an umbilical medicine moxibustion group of 31 cases and a control group of 32 cases. The symptoms were scored before and after treatment. A comparison was made between the two groups. Result There was a statistically significant pre-/post-treatment difference in the dysmenorrhea symptom score in umbilical medicine moxibustion and starch moxibustion groups (P〈0.05). There were significant differences in leg pains, diarrhea and irritability in the first period (P〈 0.05) and no in the other periods (P〉0.05) between the two groups. Conclusion Umbilicus therapy can markedly improve the dysmenorrhea symptoms in primary dysmenorrhea patients with a good long-term effect and low recurrence rate. By comparison, the therapeutic effects of umbilical medicine moxibustion and starch moxibustion are basically the same; in the first period, umbilical medicine moxibustion is superior to umbilical starch moxibustion in improving leg pains and irritability but umbilical starch moxibustion is superior to umbilical medicine moxibustion in improving diarrhea.
