At present, there are two different opinions concerning the shape of a prehistorical musical instrument called the yue. One holds that it was a panpipe kind of reed instrument, while the other considers it a single pipe flute with finger holes. There is a recent viewpoint connecting it to Neolithic bone flutes found in Jiahu, Wuyang of Henan province. In this article, the author analyzes previous opinions based on historical materials and concludes that the shape of the yue should be similar to a musical instrument popular in the ethnic minority area of Southwestern China, called Ajisanbi.
