The birthmark in Flory's face is an important clue throughout Orwell's Burmese Days, which makes Flory in an embarrassing position of "nonwhite and non -Burmese. " And the change of the birthmark from dark to pale indicates Orwell's ambiguous attitudes towards colonialism.
