The Grass Is Singing is a most influential novel by contemporary English writer Doris Lessing. The ecological problems and Lessing' s anxiety about them run through the whole novel. The young Mary had almost the same tragic fate as her mother. The patriarchal society turned Mary from a self-confident, independent person to being frustrated and numb. She has eventually lost her discourse power and right to have a baby. Besides, nature is also the theme in Doris Lessing' s works. Lessing exposes the severe damages the modern civilized society has brought to the ecosystem. People like Slatter were greedy enough to damage the land and snatch fortune from it till it became wasteland. Lessing shows her love for female and nature in her novel. She calls on the equality of both sexes and harmonious coexistence of man and nature. Her ecological ideas wake readers up to protect the whole ecology.
