Based on a discussion of the assimilation narrative in Mary Antin' s autobiography The Promised Land, this paper explores the unreliability in such a narrative from the perspectives of intratextuality, intertextuality and extratextuality, pointing out that the smooth assimilation in The Promised Land is a constructed discourse rather than historical facts ; a strategy for the Other to make herself heard.
