C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) belongs to the natriuretic peptide family which mediates its biological effects as a paracrine or autocrine regulator. There is growing evidence that CNP and its specific receptor natriuretic peptide receptor-B (NPR-B) are highly expressed in human gonads, placenta, embryo, and show a spatial and temporal specificity of expression in various reproductive processes during spermatogenesis and mature, follicular development, early embryonic development. These prompt that CNP may play an important role in the regulation of human reproductive processes. This review focuses on the molecular structure, signal transduction, biological effects of CNP and its role in reproductive process.
