"Recordings in Zhou Dynasty" are the general term for the decrees, regulations, ritual norms, and the relevant cultural semiotic systems created by Western Zhou aristocrats. To be specific, there is a "recording" tradition in ancient China, which has a long and influential history rare in any other culture. That tradition started from "the recordings in Zhou', and then passed down to the present and has never ceased. In fact, during the Spring and Autumn Period, the laws have ceased to be binding and the practice of recordings has been on the decline, but that does not mean the tradition of "recording" stopped and waned; rather, it meets a chance to gain new advances and flourishing. From the perspective of history inheritance, "the recordings in Zhou" are the point of departure for all classes of philosophers. Therefore, the ancient Chi- na, strictly speaking, has no such "history of literature" as that in the Western sense, but has a history of rich "recordings". Only on that context can any study on Chinese poetry and prose approach approximately the main line of research.
