从《诗经》到南戏后期高明的《琵琶记》、明代冯梦龙拟话本《杜十娘怒沉百宝箱》;从近代曹禺的《雷雨》到现代严扑、华萃深的《秦香莲》,这些作品中都有不少"负心汉"形象。他们在眷情与绝情中冲突,在人性没有泯灭和个人欲望中徘徊、思考。他们的罪恶是永恒的,良心发现也是永恒的,罪恶与良心的冲突一直延续,这正是"负心汉"形象系列的普遍性和特殊意义所在。
