The ratiocination novels of Edgar Allan Poe are of primary significance to the detective novels. However, his fame is mainly established by his horror fictions, which are embodied with gothic elements. These mysterious, absurd and sick subjects of such kind of short stories attribute greatly to the employment of images. This thesis will centers on the images of colors, animals, and houses. These images are derived from reality, however, they are not merely objects in that they have a touch of mysterious force and stand for evil, misfortune and even death. From the impression of these three images, the readers may have a clear understanding about the sharp contrast between sense and insanity, as well as normal and absurdity.
