Starting in the 1980s, translation studies in the west have been increasingly emphasizing the development of an empirical paradigm-dth a particular effort to investigate the internal translation processes by adopting methods from cognitive sciences. This paper reviews the development of process-oriented cognitive translation studies in the west over the past 30 years and divides it into three major stages with consideration of differences in research methods, research focus, and the extent of interdisciplinary cooperation between translation studies and cognitive sciences. The paper concludes by pointing out limitations of current process research and offering suggestions for future development while acknowledging the extraordinary promises of the area.
