Objective To understand the current status of self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) in type 2 diabetes patients whose Hblc are higher than 7.5%, in order to provide useful theoretic evidences for patients' health education. Methods A total of 128 in-patients, who met the criterion, were visited by the nurses with prepared questionnaire from December 2008 to February 2011. The contents of the survey included patients general information, blood glucose level, knowledge and skills of self-monitoring of blood glucose. Results A total of 128 sheets of questionnaire were released and retrieved, among which 122 were confirmed to be valid. No proper SMBG protocols were established by most of the patients. The knowledge of self-monitoring of blood glucose in the patients was deficient due to the limited approaches of obtaining information. Most of the patients could not correctly monitor the blood glucose level by themselves. These patients reported false operational approach for blood glucose level detection and did not have optimized frequency of blood glucose detection. Conclusions Since the current status of the patients' SMBG is not optimistic, more pertinent health education work is needed. To help the patients establish health living behaviors is still a great challenge for future work of diabetes health education.
