摘要
时间是一个抽象的概念,但西方文化利用一个拟人化的老者形象来表达时间的各种属性。作为征服者、毁灭者的时间老人体现了时间的普遍力量,在这一意义上,时间与死亡有着同一性。死神也常常与时间老人相伴,加强毁灭性的寓意。当然,两者的差别须明辨,死亡是终结,而时间意味着漫无休止。具有毁灭力量时间的负面性使得他会成为被征服的对象,作为被征服者或失败者出现在作品中。人类的勇敢、意志、智慧、真理、希望等等许多优异品质都可能是时间的征服者。在这一类型的作品中,不难体会到人类凭借自身的精神气质来对抗普遍的自然力量的努力和理想。
Time is an abstract concept, but an old man is used in the western culture to show different nature of time. The aged of time as a conqueror and a destroyer shows the general power of time, so in this sense, time and death are with identity. The god of death is often in companion with the aged of time to strengthen the meaning of destroy. Of course, their differences have to be told, since death is end, but time means continuity. The negative side of time with the power of destroying makes it the conquered object, and showing in works as the conquered and loser. The human beings with many excellent natures such as brevity, will, wisdom, truth and hope are probably the conqueror of time. In works of this type, it is not hard for us to feel the effort and ideal of the human beings to fight against the general power of nature with their own spiritual quality.
