"第一次世界建筑导报圆桌会议——八卦与建筑实践"这个想法,是从事人类学研究的学者欧阳琦首先向我们导报编辑部提出来的。她说与建筑相比,八卦对社会生活可能比建筑对社会生活更重要。她用自己来举例:我对建筑八卦的兴趣超过我对建筑本身的兴趣。我从小就喜欢听有关建筑物及其幽灵闹鬼的故事,中世纪城堡中命定的恋情,以及品味新兴都市中吃回扣和许可证麻烦的私下传闻。我钟情于八卦建筑师。我很欣赏他们阻止将一块荒地改造成一个儿童公园的故事,并倾羡他们通过泥和粘土、木材和岩石、金属、玻璃、塑料、泡沫和钢筋混泥土来实现社会和审美理想的愿望。她试图说服我们这些编辑,让她检验一下她的推测是否有根据,至少人们对八卦比对建筑更好奇。于是我们举办这个圆桌会议,题目叫"八卦与建筑实践"。结果不光是一些知名的建筑师们来了,也引逗得由深圳的媒体大鳄们组成的"后院读书会"的成员前来围观,连会议的地点也由他们免费提供。参与建筑导报圆桌会议的7位建筑师,包括刘珩、刘晓都、迈克尔·帕特、饶晓军、罗喜乐、张淼和张之扬。他们代表了一系列的所谓"文化家园"(中国、美国和法国)、各式各样的建筑公司(国际企业、国内的合作伙伴关系公司和私人公司)以及各种混杂的专业训练,其中包括了来自中国、美国和欧洲顶尖学校的专业培训。
Seven architects participated in the AW Roundtable, including Doreen LIU, LIU Xiaodu, Michael PATTE, RAO Xiaojun, Hilary ROBIE, ZHANG Miao, and Young ZHANG. The Backyard Reading Club hosted the AW Roundtable. The architects maintained that gossip had nothing to do with the actual practice of architecture, emphasizing instead technical training and aesthetic vision. In contrast, Reading Club members reminded the architects that architecture is fundamentally socia insofar as the built environment has meanings and possibilities that necessarily exceed the limits of architectural engineering and aesthetics. Gossip also has a fundamental role in determining what gets built, who builds and where, as well aswhat those buildings actually mean in and for the lives of city residents. Moreover, for many urban residents, gossip is their only access to urban planning and housing design and thus new social media such as micro-blogging have emerged as sites where the form of public space is being debate. Consequently, with respect to architectural practice, gossip is neither simply a means to nurture professional camaraderie, nor a weapon within social debates about whose designs will get built, but also a vehicle for creating imagined communities and expanding the conversation about what it means to inhabit shared worlds.
