摘要
现代主义语境下的文学空间不仅是时间的停滞或僵化的场景。文学的叙事要素若具有唯心性、共时性和参与意义建构的特征,就应进入空间叙事的研究范畴。本文以空间叙事为理论观照,考察乔伊斯·卡罗尔·欧茨的《大瀑布》的空间叙事特征与主题的关系。虽然《大瀑布》的情节完全按照时间顺序排列,但文本的深层结构具有同时性和空间并置的美学特征,小说中的地点、物品、记忆等叙事要素的唯心性、共时性和意义建构活力深刻地反映了人物身份认同危机和命运之不可抗拒的主题。
Space in literature should be more than the stillness of time or the inactive setting in the context of modernism.When the narrative elements are idealistic,synchronic and constructive in meaning,they can be included in the study of spatial narratology.Under the theoretical analysis of spatial narratology,this paper is to observe the relationship between the spatial narrative features and the themes in Joyce Carol Oates＇ The Falls.Although the plots are designed chronologically,this novel possesses synchronic and juxtaposing aesthetical features in its deep structure.In the novel,narrative elements,such as settings,objects and memories,are idealistic,synchronic and constructively dynamic,and they contribute to the revelation of themes in the novel—identity crisis and irresistible fate.
